Quiz Show

Project Summary

Quiz Show is Buzzword Bingo's sibling, made for team socials and game nights with no accounts and nothing to install. The host creates a game and puts the board on a TV or a shared screen, and everyone joins on their phone by scanning a QR code or typing a five-letter code. Games delete themselves a week after their last play.

The two games now live in one npm-workspace monorepo and share a UI package: color schemes, dark mode, invite cards, avatars, settings, and the socket and API helpers. They look like one family, and each one links to the other.

It's React and Vite on the front end, with Express, Socket.IO and Prisma on Postgres behind it. Each game is one JSON document, changed by a pure rules engine under a per-game lock, so the server, not anyone's phone, decides who buzzed first. Every connection gets its own redacted snapshot: players never receive an answer before it's revealed, and only the host's view holds the clues ahead of time.

Hosts build the board as they go. They start from ready-made categories with real clues, then rewrite any clue or add categories, even mid-game. There are Daily Doubles, a double-value second round, and a final round with secret wagers, plus clue timers, an undo for a mistaken call, and a reaction-time warm-up game in the lobby while people join.
